IN THE BEGINNING

Therapy always begins with the client’s story: depression, anxiety, worry, life crisis, personal loss, life transition, or some equally important motivating experience. Although often filled with loss, pain, grief and, too frequently, horror, these human experiences are the foundation from which personality arises and transforms. Over the course of therapy, the client will need to build a fundamental trust in his or her perceptual abilities: the courage to express thoughts and emotions and negotiate love, loss, employment, education, transformation, and even develop spiritual wisdom. If therapy is successful, there will be, within the client, a growing confidence that the world has structure and purpose and is not just a random set of events.
